Course Objectives:This course is part of the “Fisheries Technology” module of the Masters in Aquaculture and Fisheries of the Universidade do Algarve.
Content:Characteristics of the main fishing gears, species and size selectivity of fishing gears, capture mechanisms of different fishing gears, behaviour of fish and invertebrates in relation to fishing gear, the impacts of different gears on species, populations, habitats and ecosystems, by-catch and discards, ghost fishing, mitigation of the negative impacts of fishing activity.
Initial competences:Basic knowledge of fisheries biology and fisheries science, marine ecology.
Final competences:Final competences: Understanding of the type and scale of impacts on species and on the environment of different fishing gears, principles of gear species and size selectivity, mitigation methods.
Teaching methods:The course consists of a six week block including lectures, seminars and practical exercises.
